Journal of Western Travel

by John McTurk Gibson
edited by Weldon Hoppe
Gibson remained in the immediate vicinity until November 1861 when he left California from San Francisco aboard the Sonora bound for Panama. After crossing the isthmus, he boarded the Northern Light bound for an eastern seaport of the States. His journal ends while the ship is off the coast of Cape Hatteras. He returned to Iowa, where his family continued to grow. In 1868, the family moved to Jefferson County, Nebraska where they took up a homestead. He lived out the remainder of his life there and died in 1891.

Powell made his home in California. In 1926 he was living in Alameda, California.
